General orders no. 6, 1862 Aug. 12.

General orders of General Halbert E. Paine, issued by Lieutenant W.L. Payne from the headquarters of the 2nd brigade of the 19th U.S. Army Corps in Baton Rouge, La. The order consists of four separate sets of instructions. It states that citizens are to be allowed within brigade lines only by written permission, that brigade officers must communicate the order to those their successors, that firearms should not be discharged except as required in the regular performance of military duties, and that officers in the brigade should remain in camp.

Born in Chardon, Oh., in 1826, Halbert E. Paine graduated from Western Reserve College and practiced law in Cleveland, Oh., and Milwaukee, Wis. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Paine entered the Union army as the colonel of the Fourth Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment. He was promoted to brigadier general in March 1863 and led the Third Division of the Army of the Gulf in an assault on Priest Gap during the Battle of Port Hudson, where he suffered a wound that necessitated the amputation of his leg....
